“Follow the voice of the flute,” my teacher said. I have, and
it has taken me to wonderful places, and has brought many friends I would not have had otherwise. “Always, remember that the flute is a spiritual instrument,” Bill Miller said to me. I have remembered that and the flute has brought me closer to Creator and creation.

My teacher in the Lakota way said, “The flute is like the pipe, it is breath. It reminds us that God breathes us, and when he
is done breathing us, he takes our breath to himself.” He also, said that the flute is to be used after a healing to bring comfort.

I asked Louis Webster, Menomonee, “How do I learn to play the flute?” He laughed and said, “You don’t. The flute plays you, let it be your teacher.” The winds and the waters of Wisconsin have been my flute-teachers. Louis taught me to carve the wood that captures the sound of the wind and the songs of the bird.

The voice of the flute: I take special care in this part of the process. I smudge the flute in a sacred way before I begin tuning the flute and creating the voice.

Each flute has its own unique sound, or song. In the old way of tuning, whatever showed up as a tuning was the song of that particular flute. I tune the flutes to concert pitch so that they can be used with other instruments.

Right now, I am tuning them all in Em pentatonic. I do this for two reasons. First, it is a more meditative pitch than the higher ones, and secondly, it’s a great key if you are being accompanied by a guitar. Since I play both flute and guitar, it’s my preferred key.

But there is more: Hawksounds flutes are made with “recording quality.” If I wouldn’t use them in the studio, they won't be sold.

Fetishes Available

Making a flute is ceremony for me... and ceremony is never rushed or put on a clock. Rather than shaping
a flute, the flute is shaping me. When I was doing mass production of flutes, I got sick with arthritis and couldn’t make them anymore. Creator was telling me to do it in a different way…a better way.

There are many flutes out there that are “production flutes”, made on an assembly line, and usually undersell me at pow wows and art shows. However, I love these flutes into existence.

When you get a Hawksounds flute, you get part of my spirit and the spirits that help me with these instruments. After all, these are Native American love flutes.
